Introduction into Unit 5: Identity

Over the Christmas break we were given three briefs to ease are way into are new theme, we will be doing in class over the next upcoming weeks.

Are first brief was given to us by Darren which will be focusing on observational drawing. Which to be completely honest I’m a little apprehensive about but also I know it will be good to improve on my drawing from life and maybe not from a picture what I usually do. The first task given by Darren we were asked think of 10 words or phrases that important to describing our identity.

I decided to approach this task by googling the mean of identity…Here is my sketchbook entry. After googling I found two meanings to the word which I found it quite interesting , how identity doesn’t just define what makes you who you are but how you are defined as an upcoming artist.

And here is my sketchbook entry of the 10 words. I decided to create a simple mind map which I’m still working on it. I found this task a little difficult with coming up with the right words to describe me. I made sure not to be too negative.

The other task are class was given, create a monotone self-portrait. I was immediately terrified by this task because I really struggle with drawing faces and people but college is all about improving and broadening my skills. my self-portrait, I’m quite happy with this sketchbook entry I did struggle with trying to get the proportions right but I think I did pretty well. Maybe next time I would work on the background and the hair.

Artist Research-informing my practical ideas and developing my artworks/designs

The food for thought unit was based on artist research, learning about the different art movements across history, gallery visits, retrieving primary and secondary information and creating transcription pieces… All are which written about in previous blog posts, here are some photos from this unit

My last practical task done for this unit, I set a mini project for myself which was to do a mini response to one of Elleri Mills is pieces. Which my eyes were instantly drawn to. With Elleri Mills is work it was based on landscapes in India, so for my piece I decided to base it off a photograph of a landscape I took back in September when i was on holiday in Cyprus. Which is shown below


For my piece I decided to focus on colour and the use of different kind of stitching instead of getting an accurate landscape. I hand dyed the fabric which I really enjoyed doing and I really let myself go in this mini project I did. Here is the finished result



And to close up this unit we had to write a comparison of two artworks of are choice: I decided to choose the Woman at the Window do to the extensive research I had previously done and the Weeping Woman also by Picasso. I decided to go for both pieces by Pablo Picasso because I knew there was plenty of information about Picasso and the pieces online. Weeping Woman 1937 by Pablo Picasso 1881-1973After researching the weeping woman I was amazed at how one pieces of art had so much background and story to it and has made me look at the piece of art in a completely different way . The piece was Pablo Picasso’s response to the bombing of Guernica. When writing are comparison we had to consider each element of both pieces the colours,expression,meaning, shapes, shadow. We also had to consider the differences between both pieces…

My finished transcription piece- Pablo Picasso Woman at the window

Yesterday we were given all day to complete are A1 transcription piece. Here is a photo graph taken of my transcription piece

For this piece, I was unsure about what media to use as the piece I had chosen was a print and I felt like from the previous print I had done of Picasso work didn’t give the finish I wanted. I eventually came to the discussion that I was going to mix using oil pastels, chalk, charcoal, white paint, off white paint and pencil…

To begin with I painted the A1 piece of paper with the off white and white paint to create an oldish looking effect to the paper. I decided to do a rough sketch up on the paper the outline of my idea (my dad drawn from three different angles.) I then went in with oil pastels to create the thick black lines the same style as Picasso used in the pieces blending the off white background and the black oil pastels with chalk it got rid of the sharpness of the white, I saw how blending these two materials together revealed a ribbed texture of the paper which was a nice surprised, still keeping peeks of white beaming through the black like what was done in Picasso’s pieces. After adding the black,grey and white I felt like something was missing… before creating the A1 pieces I created three mini versions of the pieces each slightly different from the each other. I tested colour with the three ‘mini versions’ of the A1 pieces and i liked the bold red colour i used but i felt it would have been slightly to extreme to create the full A1 in red. I thought the splash of red colour was the thing i was missing in the pieces, adding the red to the main points of the pieces.  I’m pretty with the outcome of the pieces, I maybe should have add more to the background due to the way i feel like it’s missing something, I’m going to consider this and maybe i will continue to develop this in the near future.

I asked my dad what his view of the pieces was and he just smiled and laughed so I take that as he liked it 🙂

Exciting Upcoming artist- Artistiaid Cyffroes y Dyfodol

For today’s task we were asked to team up in pairs and to interview each-other. I was lucky to enough to get to interview young and inspiring welsh artists, Erin Williams

Together we came up with 8 different questions to ask each other. Here is the interview:

Well, cychwynnodd fy diddordeb mewn celf yn nol yn mlwyddyn 3, am fy mod wedi cael athrawes celf anhygol or ene Mrs Parry, dysgais llawer iawn ganddi fel ddim i fod yn  ovn i drion pethau a deunyddiau newydd. Roedden ni’n creu llawer o waith 3D efo athro amcan y dasg oedd bod mor ddychmygol â meddwl allan o’r bocs oeddan ni yn gelly fod.Efo Mrs Parry creuon ni hunan portread i anfon i griw celf.Rwyf yn ddiolchgar iawn i Mrs Parry

I fod yn hollol onest rwyf yn hoff o bob mathau o ddeunyddiau gwahanol. Ond os dwi’n gorfod dewis un gweithio efo deunyddiau 3D yw’r un rwyf yn mynd i ddewis. Rwyf yn hoff o ddefnyddio pinnau ffelt enw ‘pro markers’ i greu darluniadau o bobl neu anifeiliaid, rwy’n hoff iawn o allu cymysgu tonyddiaeth rhwng lliwiau gwahanol, creu cysgodion a chreu lluniau realistig ond hefyd yn semi abstract

Starry Night gan Vincent van Gogh oedd fy ysbrydoliaeth fwyaf pan oeddwn i’n ifanc. Roedd yna gymaint o donyddiaeth a lliwiau gwahanol wedi ei ddefnyddio yn gweithio’n llwyddiannus efo’i gilydd.

Pablo Picasso- Woman at the window 1952

After researching art movement we liked as part of Mike’s research skills unit, we had to look into an artist that was part of the art movement which was Cubism and I decided on the artist Pablo Picasso. After focusing on the artist we had chosen we had to choose a pieces from the artist that we liked and I went with Woman at the window 1952. I was drawn to this print straight i liked the abstracted element to it and the fact it isn’t perfect, with the slanted eye.

I found it very interesting researching into the background of this artwork, I found out that the woman in this Gilot was Pablo Picasso’s partner and was used as the subject of his piece which Picasso was known for using his countless partners as his subjects for his paintings/prints. As part of this task we had to analysis the piece of artwork we had chosen

I did struggle a little with analysing the pieces because I found it hard to find where to start but eventually did start. Some of my comments are in Welsh.

After completing the artwork pieces breakdown we had to pic out key elements we liked in the picture and then we had to recreate that piece we focused on

I decided to close up on the face  because that was the first part of the artwork that i was drawn to, due to the dark use of lines on the face with a little spots on the face with white  from where the light hits. I enjoyed this tasks i found it a little difficult to get started on but after i overcame i really enjoyed the task. I then created a full size piece of Picasso pieces both a sketch and a mono print.

I’m very pleased with how they both turned out, the sketch is unfinished but it is coming along it is quiet difficult to do the hands . I’m supper pleased with how the print has turned out I usually struggle to create prints due to the fact it can be a messy process and if you make a mistake it isn’t easy to remove. For the print i did a dry-point.

The last practical task for the research skills unit was a transcription piece I decided to use my dad as my subject and I drew him from three different profiles. I tried to keep to the use of dark lines and placing the eye centre to mimic Picasso’s style.

Here is a photography of my sketchbook page of a first draft of my transcription piece, I’m really happy with how it’s turned out I enjoyed this task i found it very freeing where i was able to do mistakes, and go crazy with the end result. Which i don’t normally do i always strive for perfection, that not always achieve able. I’m still yet to finish my Final transcription piece, I will update the blog with the finished piece

Research Skills.

Currently are college class is working on a unit of work called Research skills for are tutor Mike. The first task in the unit was to write down tools and methods we need when doing research

We discussed as a class what different kind of tools for example local library, Books. And then as a class we discussed methods and there are two types of research method quantitative which focuses more on numbers , for an example surveys and questioners. Whilst qualitative is more focused on the standard of research. Also as a class we discussed about Primary and Secondary research and what is the meaning of them.

  • Primary research is more face to face and find the source yourself for example going to a gallery and talking to the artists like the Ruthin Craft Centre which i have done a recent blog post about.
  • Secondary research – getting information from somebody else for example getting information from the internet or a book.

The last thing we discussed as a class was what was known to be recognised source and what was considered unrecognised .

After documenting the class discussion we were given a task breakdown of the day. Which were:

  1. Select an art movement
  2. Research art movement/artist from an unrecognised source
  3. Research art movement/artist from a recognised source
  4. Compare two sources

We were then given a hand out of a BBC guidance internet research. And then we were asked to summarise the hand out.

Then we were given the rest of the day to complete the task breakdown. The first task breakdown to choose an art movement I decided to go for cubism because after the timeline task I was intrigued by the movement and I had never heard of the movement before I wanted to learn more. For the second task i looked at a couple of bad websites like for an example Wikipedia because the information on the website can be altered by anybody. For my good website source i found the Tate gallery a good website to use because it is updated regularly and the information is provided by experts.
